System mapping enables participants to build a common understanding of the boundaries of an innovation system as well as the actors, resources, and relationships within that system.
The mapping process typically requires engagement with stakeholders in participatory exercises that encourage critical and reflective thinking about system structures and architecture, how change in an innovation system might occur, and what the outcomes of such changes might be.
